Professor John Thompson
Western Australians with a special interest in melanoma prevention, diagnosis and treatment are invited to a free lecture at the State Library of WA in November to hear about the latest advances in melanoma research from Professor John Thompson, a world leader on the subject and Director of the Melanoma Institute of Australia.
The free public lecture is on Wednesday 10th November 2010 between 6pm and 7pm, in the State Library of WA, Perth Cultural Centre.
The topics will include practical advice on how to identify a melanoma and differentiate these from other spots or moles on the skin, what to do after diagnosis, the types of treatment available and the cutting edge research which will improve prospects for patient care in the future.
Melanoma is the fourth most common cancer in Australia and along with breast cancer is the MOST common cancer in the 15-44 year age group.
The public address has been organised by the Scott Kirkbride Melanoma Research Centre (SKMRC), which is part of the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR). SKMRC will also host a satellite symposium on advances in melanoma for the scientific and medical community.
SKMRC is dedicated to increasing awareness, research and education about Melanoma and was set up following the death of keen golfer, Scott Kirkbride at the age of 27.
